CHAPTER 24

Washington, D.C.

THE MORE MENACING MAN that had escorted Besserman into a black SUV introduced himself as Hitchens. The other man, who responded to Verne, turned around from the front seat and took a deep breath. Besserman hated being at the mercy of these two men, especially since they seemed to enjoy it so much.

Irked by the lack of communication from the two, Besserman decided to press the issue.

“So, are we going to just sit here all day or are you going to tell me what’s going on?” Besserman asked.

“What do you think?” Hitchens asked his partner. “Should we tell him?”

Verne narrowed his eyes and shook his head, barely discernible. “What would be the point? He’s not going to like what we’re going to do with him.”

“Guys, if we truly work for the same boss, I think a little professional courtesy would go a long way in clearing up this misunderstanding,” Besserman said.

“You call this a misunderstanding?” Hitchens asked as he narrowed his eyes. “You came here with the intention of spying on the director of the CIA. There’s no other possible reason you could be doing this.”

Besserman closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. “If you were anything other than hired muscle, you’d understand there are myriad reasons why I could be doing what I was doing.”

“You know what I hate more than anything?” Verne asked as he looked at Hitchens.

“Cold tomato soup?” Hitchens asked with a smirk. “Tom Brady winning another Super Bowl? Camping and you have to pee but it’s twelve degrees outside your tent?”

Verne scowled. “All equally awful, but still incomparable to being lied to. That’s something I just don’t have any tolerance for. Whenever someone has the audacity to lie to my face, I want to punch them in theirs.”

Besserman held up his wrists. “Remove these zip ties from me and let’s go right there on the sidewalk.”

“I’ve been instructed to refrain from, and I quote, ‘permanently disfiguring you’,” Verne said. “You’d be no match for me old man, and as much as that smart mouth of yours makes me want to knock you out cold, I actually listen to my boss instead of spying on him.”

The suggestion that Verne could disfigure Besserman made him angry. And while he wasn’t in a position to respond to such a preposterous notion, he had to mull over another way to gain the upper hand. After sitting quietly for a few moments and ignoring Verne’s continual mocking, Besserman made his move.

In a swift move, he leaned forward and used his bound hands to grab the driver side seatbelt. He yanked on it hard, securing it around Verne’s neck before the locking mechanism held it in place. Unable to ignore the commotion, Hitchens turned to subdue Besserman but instead suffered a throat punch.

Verne flailed his arms to free himself, while Hitchens coughed, struggling to regroup from the wicked blow. Before he could regain his composure, Besserman grabbed Hitchens by his hair and bashed his head against the window.
